Mary Etta's parents came from Germany and immigrated to the United States and settled in Maryland.

Children were Emily (married Valentine Fisher), Georgia Ann (Married Thomas Stevens), Arilda (married to Dr. Winnings who died, and she later married James Barton), Ben Ann (married to James Monroe Bottomley, who was first married to Lydia Jane Knight), Della (married George Miller), William (died in youth), John W. (1859-1902, buried on James Bottomley's plot in Bellefontaine Cemetary), and Harriett (married James Arms).
